Mike Bliss’s distinctive style of painting/photography/digital art is sexy, bold, colorful, iconic, and homoerotic. Danny Hilton spoke to him about his work.

Hey Mike, so where are you from?

I’m from the northeast of England. I paint beautiful naked men for a living!

Describe your style.

If Kylie Minogue & Tom of Finland had a baby… (winks) Erotic Pop Art.

Your art is a real mixture – are you a painter, photographer, digital artist, or a bit of all three?

I’m a painter and sometime digital artist. I’m just discovering the joy of digital art. I’m very grateful to David Hockney for legitimizing the medium. I only ever take photos when needed for commissions. Although I have just bought a flash new camera, so that may change.

How did you get started?

I came out of the womb with a paint brush! (laughs). I’ve always drawn, for as long as I can remember. It’s like a religious calling, I guess.

What’s the most difficult part of your work?

I find it very difficult not to paint. There are times when I wish I could just switch off from work. The slightest thing can inspire me. I’m addicted!

Is there a piece that stands out as your favorite?

I think if I had to choose (very Sophie’s Choice), it would have to be “Lies.”  I think it speaks to everyone. We’ve all questioned someone’s love for us at least once in our life.

What kind of guys do you like?

Physically, I like Latin men.  If it’s outside aesthetics then they have to (in no order) have great eyes, a smile that lights up the room, a sharp mind, and make me laugh.

Who would you most like to paint/photograph?

I would love the Queen to commission a portrait. I’ve done some work based on photographs of her, but I would love the opportunity to work for her. She radiates dignity.
