The Good: Overall, the film is fun and full of laughs. It has a lot of the familiar, quirky space alien antics and comical gags that made the first two films big hits. Smith carries the film quite well, as does Brolin, who does a tremendous job filling Jones’ shoes as the young Agent K. Plus, this film pops in 3D, and the action sequences are quite entertaining.
The Gay: Wow, talk about retro flashback! Those of us who are fans of nostalgia and ’60s style are in for a treat. And Emma Thompson is amazing as The Agency head honcho Agent O. She’s absolutely radiant in everything she does, and this is no exception. Also, former Pussycat Doll lead X Factor USA judge, and DWTS winner Nicole Scherzinger makes an appearance as Boris The Animal’s girlfriend. Meow!
The Bad: Not too much on the bad side in this flick besides the fact that it falls under the “typical summer blockbuster popcorn movie” category. The film could’ve been just a tad funnier and perhaps a little shorter. There are some holes and discrepancies in the plot, in general and in relation to the last two films. For the most part, though, it works.
The Fugly: Okay, let’s address this whole ’60s retro flashback thing that Hollywood is so obsessed with. As much as I’m a fan of that era, it makes me wonder if MIB3 was trying to cash in on the whole Mad Men craze. The scene where we see the 1960s version of The Academy looked like it was recycled from the set of Austin Powers. Hell, I was waiting for Dr. Evil to show up and ask for sharks with freakin’ lasers on their heads! Plus, do we really need another time travel flick? Seriously.
Back to Black, or let bygones be bygones?: Overall, this third Men In Black instalment will satisfy the fans and amuse those who are looking for a fun, summer escapist film. The 3D is great, and the film works, making it a great way to cap off the MIB series. If you’re looking for an action alternative to seeing The Avengers, it’s a safe choice.
The Grade: B+
