Kay, better known as My Name Is Kay, is a taste of Canada’s tangy sociability and charisma. With a cute curl and words that cut, this cowgirl from Nova Scotia is putting us back on the map for something better than Bieber. She has, what I believe to be, the hottest club tracks of the year.
I sat down with the fun-loving girl for a gossip sesh about her stupid ex-boyfriend, revenge, gay clubbing, and her upcoming album!
For the most part I am a really happy person and I just want to have a good time and I hope that’s kind of the message of all of my music. It’s like “Yeah, we have all been dumped, we have all had these types of situations!”
My favourite thing is just getting together with a group of friends and just dancing our asses off and having a great time. I think there is nothing better than that. That is kind of who I am as a person when you get to the bottom of it. I just wanna dance and have a good time. If you’re gonna cry, just cry and cry it out… and then dance!
While Kay is single and ready to mingle she says her relationship status may have something to do with the amount of time she spends with gay men rather than potential suiters.
That is definitely my jam. Which is why I am single. I can’t understand why I can’t meet a man, but it is probably because I am at gay clubs all the time. It’s the best thing to go and dance your ass off and not be hit on by creepy dudes. [Also] everyone smells great! I am the person who loves everyone and that just happens to be a really comfortable place for me.
Kay, a die-hard Sarah McLachlan fan, always dreamed of being just like her idol. Even though she is climbing the ladder of fame her approach has shifted significantly.
I hit puberty and I was super into Sarah. Her songs are very emotional! I mean you see them on the commercials for like the puppy dogs and stuff and they pull your heart strings. I was just kind of finding myself and I mean obviously she is an amazing artist, but there is only one Sarah McLachlan! I would definitely not compare myself to her! I think I was at her concert or something and I was like “That’s me! That’s who I am going to be!” and it’s like, “No it’s not!”
You have probably heard her song “Strangers,” an upbeat angst track about a boy who broke her heart. You are really missing out if you haven’t seen the video.
Now, looking back, I think maybe he might of been bored and he wanted someone to hang out with on a rainy day. I was that person. But when it came to going out and meeting his friends or being out socially it was like I didn’t exist. That’s the worst. So that was kind of my answer to that relationship.
It was pretty obvious, but I think sometimes love is blind and you want what you can’t have! Especially when you’re in a relationship and you care more than the other person… you’re constantly telling lies to yourself like, “He’ll come around.”
Then he broke up with me so I was left with no other choice.
I am a very nice person, but I do love getting revenge. I think success is the best revenge. You don’t need to say anything directly to the person. You get the win at the end of the day if you work your butt off. There is nothing that tastes better than that.
That’s all he gets on this album though.
From her cheeky grin to her nitty-gritty nature, Kay is a kick ass-kid. “I do want respect! I want that! I definitely want that in my life,” she says.
The new album is said to be a celebration of her highs and lows all wrapped in a rhinestone-studded attitude.
The album is a bit of a variety. I have some more dancing kind of songs on there as well as some slower songs that are deep and meaningful. For me I just kind of do what feels good when I go into the studio. I am never looking for one specific sound.
This is going to be me, boom, out there, naked! I write all my own songs and all of the songs are about things that have really happened.
Here is her new video, just released the other day! You saw it here first.
