5 Celebrity Bromances: Andy Cohen, Tom Daley, Frank Ocean and More

It used to be that gay and straight men just didn’t hang much. Surely, homophobia was the main cause of the estrangement. It was the ever-charming Andy Rooney who once complained that while he was not apposed to equality he certainly “wouldn’t want to spend much time in a small room” with a gay man. (The feeling was mutual.)
But Rooney is now dead — may be rest in peace — and these times they are a-changing.
Perhaps straight men have let down their guards after figuring out that not every gay guy wants to sleep with them. Or perhaps gay and straight guys alike have simply realized that, at the end of the day, the sexual attractions of your friends don’t matter. Sex is irrelevant to friendship.
Whatever the reason, there seems to be a whole new comfort level between the orientations.
Check out these five adorable gay/straight bromances. And expect to see many, many more in the coming years.
Andy Cohen and Sean Avery
Total top Andy Cohen and NHL star Sean Avery met at a party in the Hamptons back in 2011 and immediately hit it off.
“We’re brothers from a different mother,” Cohen once told New York Magazine.
Last fall, the Bravo exec denied he and Avery were an item, telling TMZ, “Sean Avery is straight. Do you understand that? So a gay guy and a straight guy should be able to be friends.”
Then he added: “Listen, I’d be happy if Sean and I were bangin’ … but it’s not [happening].”
Whomp, whomp.
Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart
The Gandalf-Picard bromance heated up earlier this year when Sirs Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart made the media rounds together to promote the latest X-Men movie.
Their bromance includes taking lots of selfies together and regularly tweeting at each other, as well as McKellen officiating Stewart’s wedding last September.
When asked about what draws them to one aother, Stewart told Yahoo! News it was “both our differences and our similarities,” which includes being “passionate about Shakespeare and being in the theater and we went to the [Royal Shakespeare Company] to learn our jobs… and we are mutant superheroes!”
Tom Daley and Liam Payne
The openly gay diving champ and the allegedly straight One Direction star first connected in the summer of 2012 after Liam tweeted his support to Tom after he was flamed on Twitter. A fiery bromance ignited.
“I’m really good mates with Liam,” Daley told the Daily Star in December 2012. “Usually on a typical boys’ night, you’ll find him and me down at Funky Buddha having a few drinks and a dance. Either that or we’ll go for a Chinese or a Wagamama.”
We’d go for a Wagamama with these two cuties any day of the week.
Frank Ocean and John Mayer
R&B crooner Frank Ocean and rocker John Mayer have what many might consider a “working bromance.” The twosome have collaborated on several occasions over the past few years.
The duo first joined forces on the track “White” off Ocean’s hit album Channel Orange. Mayer also appeared in the Ocean’s music video “Pyramids” and performed alongside him on SNL in 2012. A year later, Ocean lent his vocals for a track on Mayer’s album Paradise Valley.
“Frank is such an interesting, deep, touched, wonderful guy,” Mayer told Rolling Stone last year. “They don’t make a lot of other Frank Oceans.”
Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine
The Star Trek co-stars’ bromance may be one of the cutest out there.
Not only do Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine have great chemistry on screen, but they’re totally adorable together during interviews and on the red carpet–joking, high-fiving, and complimenting one another. The duo is so close that when asked what color Pine’s eyes are, without looking Quinto replied: “Cerulean. Bombay Sapphire. The deep end of the pool.”
Oh, and rumor has it they even have matching tattoos.
Last year, Quinto opened up about his close friendship with Pine to Out Magazine, saying, “I look forward to the press tour and all of the activity that’s kicked up around the movie lately so we can reconnect and have another version of the experience.”
Sounds like true platonic love.
