From GAY STAR NEWS by Greg Hernandez: Michael Douglas knows gay actors who stay closeted to protect their livelihoods.
Michael Douglas, who played Liberace in HBO’s highly-rated Behind the Candelabra, says he personally knows gay actors who are remaining closeted to protect their careers.
As a straight actor who portrayed a gay man, Douglas was asked in an interview with ShortList.com if he thinks the public would accept a gay actor playing a straight man.
‘It’s a good question,’ Douglas says. ‘Without naming names, I certainly think there are a couple of people out there who have not come out in the spirit of protecting their careers and livelihoods. It’s probably a little bit more difficult going that way. I think that’s true.’
But with such actors as Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, Neil Patrick Harris and several others coming out in recent years, Douglas sees a changing tide.
‘It’s a much smaller minority of people who think they still have to stay in the closet,’ he says. ‘It’s quite interesting to see how fast it’s all changed.’
Douglas, an Oscar winner for Wall Street, has played plenty of so-called Alpha Males in his career and he considers Liberace to be one of them.
‘He may be gay,’ Douglas says, ‘but he’s an Alpha Male on top of his game.’
