If you missed Coco Peru’s wonderful show, There Comes a Time, at Manhattan’s Laurie Beechman Theatre, you didn’t just miss the drag queen’s celebration of 20 years in show business, you missed one of those rare productions that reminds you why you go to theater in the first place. A performer who can toss out a line like “Anyone remember AIDS…?” and somehow make it both un-offensive and hysterical is probably dangling a little bit of genius with those pearls.
A guy picks up the phone and Olivia Newton-John says “Hello.” For any gay man whose never been mellow, honestly loved someone, or felt hopelessly devoted, this isn’t just the antithesis of the straight-man’s “A guy walks into a bar…” set-up; it’s Xanadu.
