It took a mere few moments for me to fall in love with this Auckland girl and her phenomenal new video about nothing in particular.
Going by the stage name “Lorde,” Ella Yelich O’Connor is going to be big. I am so entranced by her ability to manipulate silence within her tracks. Her songs feel intimate, simple, and almost sarcastic, all at the same time.
With slow-motion shots of head shavings and boys in boxer shorts, her video for “Royals” is simply delectable. Her lyrics celebrate the fact that she will never be one of the rich and fabulous but she is more than happy with that fact. “That kind of lux just ain’t for us, we crave a different kind of buzz.”
I watched it close to seven times before gleaming that there is no need for a meaning. The cinematography is there solely to sell the soft and sensual vocals of Lorde, whose full EP is available for your free listening here.
Is this clip “Royal,” or just a royal pain in the ass?
