I had an opportunity to sit down with Vancouver boy Rob Goddard (Mr. Gay Canada) right before he got on a plane to Manilla, Philippines to begin the Mr. Gay World competition.

So what the heck is Mr. Gay World you ask? Well, in a little pink nutshell, it’s a pageant of sorts with a ‘mission to advance national and international Gay rights through education and public performance.’

Event organizers are looking for a genuine and positive (and handsome) role model that will champion equality and diversity in both mainstream and Gay media. With a total of 23 nations competing including Canada, USA, Australia and South Africa it is surely going to be a competitive year!

The competition begins today and takes place over the next four days with the grand finale happening on the 13th of March. Delegates are tested in leadership, speaking skills and marketability as a spokesperson and will compete in a sports challenge, interview panel, national costume, photography, swimwear and public speaking. The winner will also take home over $25,000 CDN in prizes and will actually be appearing here this summer at The 2011 North American Outgames.

This is a photo from the welcome event that happened this morning and included a little pep talk from last years’s winner, South African, Charl VanDenBerg

For more information go to Best of luck to Rob and all the other delegates!
