Pride London organisers say plans are on course to host WorldPride in 2012.
The event will not be affected by the 2012 Olympics, which will require around 9,000 police officers each day.
WorldPride will be held in early July and although the Olympics will not start until July 27th, extra officers will be drafted into London weeks before the games start.
Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis announced last year that the festival would take a break in 2012 because the vast majority of portable toilets would be in use at the Olympics, along with police staff shortages.
Pride London spokesman Colm Howard-Lloyd said that Pride organisers had been discussing WorldPride plans with local authorities for the last few years and there was no reason why the event would not go ahead..
A special committee has been set up to consider the logistics of the event, he said.
He added: “Realistically, we expect to double our numbers – around the two million mark.”
Pride 2011 will be held on Saturday July 2nd and Mr Howard-Lloyd dismissed suggestions of financial problems.
“We’re just waiting to sign a contract with a headline sponsor, which should be a relief and means we’ll be able to get a lot done in the next few years,” he said.
The charity’s accounts are almost three months late but he said that this was “fairly standard” and was because the annual general meeting had not yet been held.
Pride London is to announce the theme of this year’s event shortly.
When I attended Euro Pride last summer in Warsaw it was a truly moving event…it was the first time a larger Pride had ever happened in a former communist country and I had been to Pride there a few years earlier and it was quite scary to tell you the truth.
The feeling in Warsaw in 2010 was VERY different. There is a real power that can be had when Gay men and women from around the world come together in solidarity. Take a look at this video I shot at the event.
Have you ever attended a World or Euro Pride? What was your experience like and will you attend London ‘s World Pride in 2012? Let us at GUYSPY know!
